Program description

This program helps you learn or improve your English, and prepares you for post-secondary study and future employment. You develop English proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary, while also focusing on essential skills for success and communication in various academic and professional contexts. Language learning is facilitated through interactive activities, discussions, use of multimedia materials, in-class instruction and experiential learning outside the classroom, as well as an exploration of personal, abstract and global topics.

Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 of are also available.

What are the admission requirements for the General Arts and Science – English for Academic Purposes program?

General Arts and Science – English for Academic Purposes admission requirements

Ontario Secondary School diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with ONE of the following:

  • the completion of General English as a Second Language 4 with a minimum average of 60%
  • ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ English for Academic Purposes placement test
  • IELTS (see minimum requirement details below)
  • TOEFL (see minimum requirement details below)

Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED, and equivalency testing. Additional information

Students take a placement test at ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, or submit an official, valid IELTS or TOEFL Test Report Form at the time of admission to determine the appropriate starting level.

In order to be eligible for the Ontario College Certificate, students must complete a minimum of levels seven and eight.

While most students choose English for Academic Purposes (EAP) as a pathway to further studies, some graduates of the program may find employment in occupations requiring English language proficiency. Graduates may transfer their acquired English language skills to career advancement and opportunities in other countries.

  • Select two 21-hour courses from the available list during registration. A 42-hour general education course may also be considered. Contact the Program Co-ordinator for further details.

In this program, some courses will provide an option to choose fully in person or fully online. You’ll choose one delivery method, that fits your circumstances, for the duration of the semester.
